The article that follows discusses the question
What is a Vegetarian?

  What is a Vegetarian?
There are different types of people in
                          this category

It is often thought that people who prefer a vegetarian diet
are one homogeneous set of people who just don’t eat
meat. This is a world away from the actual truth of the
matter.  There are many categories within this Lifestyle
and these categories are as as diverse as the reasons for
becoming a vegetarian or eating a vegetarian diet in the
   first instance.

So then What is a Vegetarian? Generally a person is
defined as a vegetarian if they don’t eat meat. However
such a person could conceivably eat cheese and eggs and
drink milk - all the dairy products. A person who doesn’t
consume fish, poultry or meat,, but does drink milk or eat
cheese or eggs is known as a lacto ovo vegetarian. A lacto
vegetarian on the other hand takes cheese and milk
   products, but doesn’t consume eggs.

A person who doesn’t eat any animal product or by
-product, including dairy food is known as a Vegan. ~
Vegans consume only fruits, nuts vegetables, legumes and
grains. Vegans also will not use such things as leather as
they are products, derived from animals. As white sugar
uses a substance, in the process to whiten it, which is
derived from the bones of animals Vegans don’t use white
   sugar either.

The Community within this Lifestyle
     also has other categories.
     Fruitarians are an example. They
eat only fruit, their rationale being
that fruits, including fruits such as
     tomatoes are self-perpetuating
in that  they don’t need to be
planted in order to create the food
source. This, they say, is a way of
eating that is most in balance and
     harmony with the earth and
     therefore the most natural.
  All
     categories of Vegetarians are quite

happy to eat cooked vegetables, fruits and legumes. Eating only raw or living foods is also
growing in popularity and becoming quite a movement within this Lifestyle. This is based
on the assumption that the process of cooking food leaches most of the nutrients out of it.
It is felt that food is best consumed raw or juiced to get all the nutritional value, vitamins
and amino acids required. If food is cooked at all this should only be to slightly over 100
degrees, this will ensure the nutrients are still retained.

It is most important to remember that as you become more restrictive with your diet,
however, you need to educate yourself all the more to be certain you are getting all the
necessary proteins and vitamins that is necessary to maintain good health, especially
   muscle and heart health.

Hopefully this article has answered the question ‘What is a Vegetarian?’
This site aims to aid you in educating yourself and discovering more of the benefits there are
in being vegetarian. Read more articles on such subjects as ‘You are what you eat’ and
